OSHA Offers $10.3 Million in Grants to Promote Roof Safety

When your roof begins to show minor signs of wear and tear, it can be tempting for the self-sufficient Arizona homeowner to skip the call to a roofing company in Gilbert, AZ. That temptation can be extra strong when you’re talking about a roof that’s just a single story off the ground. If you’re an amateur craftsman, don’t underestimate the importance of safety precautions when undertaking chores on your roof. If at all possible, consider hiring a professional who can maintain the integrity of your roof for you. It’s that serious.

Falls really do happen—a lot

Even those professionals who spend all day on their feet walking along rooftops find themselves falling off a roof for a variety of reasons. Every year, falls account for three quarters of all deaths in the roofing industry. Falls account for about a third of the deaths in the broader construction industry, as well. Those aren’t all falls from great heights, either. In 2014, 647 people died from falling off something, and 340 of those fatal falls were from heights of 20 feet or less.

Getting onto and off of your roof can be treacherous, as well. Every year, half a million people sustain injuries from falling off ladders. More than 300 of those people succumb to their injuries. Ninety-seven percent of those accidents were non-professionals making a mistake in their own home.

In other words, trying your hand as amateur roofers can be hazardous to your health.

OSHA gets in on the safety

The threat posed by on-the-job falls is so significant that, in October 2019, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provided more than $10 million in grants to various nonprofits and small businesses throughout the United States. The primary goal of the funding is to stress the importance of safety among smaller organizations with a staff that may not speak English as a first language.

Large portions of the OSHA grant money is being spent with the express purpose of “covering the use of ladders and scaffolds and prevention of falls from roofs.”

Before you toss a ladder up and try your hand at roofing, you might be safer and more satisfied with the final product if you put your roof in the hands of a true professional.
