What’s the Difference Between Tile and Shingle Roofing?

If you’re thinking about replacing your roof, there are a number of options to consider. For years, shingle roofing has been an American standard, but these days it’s becoming more and more common for people to consider tile roofing as an alternative.

Perhaps you’re one of the many people currently trying to decide whether tile or shingle roofing is right for you. We’ve put together this guide to hopefully help make your decision easier when you need roofing services in Gilbert, AZ.

The basics of tile roofing

Tile roofing has always been more popular outside of the U.S., where the homes are often much older, and therefore use the more traditional tile roofs. In the U.S., tile roofs are most often seen on purposefully Mediterranean style houses, houses with Spanish or Portuguese flavors especially. These tiles are usually made of slate or terra cotta, and are laid overlapping each other in rows. This provides excellent water resistance and a highly attractive roof, and they’re also very easy to replace one by one if they’re ever damaged. Tile roofing tends to last 20 to 30 years longer than traditional shingle roofing. Some manufacturers offer warranties of up to 50 years!

The basics of shingle roofing

Shingles are most often made from asphalt and covered with small bits of gravel. They’re installed in overlapping rows to keep out water. Asphalt is highly waterproof, which makes asphalt tiles a reliable and relatively affordable way to cover your bulding. Their popularity probably stems primarily from their upfront cost. But again, they aren’t likely to last as long as a tile roof, and often need to be replaced after 25 or 30 years. They’re prone to moss growth issues, as well, which can greatly decrease their lifespan, so they may require some additional upkeep, depending on where you live.

The differences between tile and shingle roofing

Here’s a closer look at the three key areas in which tile and shingle roofing materials differ:

  • Price: Tile roofing costs almost twice as much as a shingle roof, but also lasts almost twice as long. In terms of total price, therefore, the price probably comes close to evening out. If you’re just judging by upfront cost, however, shingle roofing will win every time.
  • Weight: Tile roofing is significantly heavier than shingle roofing. If you plan to replace your old shingle roofing with tile roofing, it is absolutely imperative that you check with a contractor to make sure your home’s structure can actually support the additional weight, as not every home is designed to carry that much additional weight.
  • Climate Resistance: Tiles are generally better in colder climates, as they’re less likely to be damaged by severe freeze/thaw cycles, whereas shingles are often preferred in warmer climates because of how good they are at reflecting sunlight.
